Like me, you may already be aware that the ability to influence people is at the heart of successful communication.

I have always been fascinated by how some people have a magical influence over others. It seemed they had a special talent. When I discovered NLP (neuro-linguistic-programming), I was stunned to discover much much influence could be earned, just through the use of language.

Maybe those people did have a special talent .... but it's one that you can have too.

So I set out to to become great at using language to achieve outstanding results in both my personal and professional pursuits.

Over the years I’ve found that we are always influencing other people. It turns out that you cannot, not communicate. This is true whether you’re trying to convince someone to buy you a coffee or persuading a client to pay the deposit on a private jet.

Since you’re influencing people all the time anyway, doesn’t it make sense that you take the time to learn how to influence people with more precision and elegance?

I must confess that while NLP boasts a vast array of tools and techniques for helping people, what initially drew my attention was the idea that you can use the way you say things to influence people.

And while I love seeing how broadly NLP can change people's lives for the better, I am repeatedly reminded that learning how to use language effectively is one of the best investments a person can make.

There are three stages of learning to go through to master the persuasive language patterns thoroughly:

  • learn how to formulate language patterns for myself.
  • wire these patterns in to the unconscious mind – the part of the mind responsible for automatic responses and behaviour.
  • practice these patterns in such a way that I could see the responses of the people I was using them on.

Perhaps the best way to do these 3 things is to play games.

You could read books and listen to CDs to learn them. But experience shows that playing cards is the fastest and easiest way to wire the patterns into your unconscious mind so that you have them instantly at your disposal.

Tips for Rapid Learning

  • Play makes learning fast and fun, so use games like Solitaire, Slapjack or Persuasive Eights (rules included).
  • Certain phrases are in italics. You can 'analogue mark' these phrases (E.g. with a gesture, a touch, lowered voice tone, a raised eyebrow etc.) to send commands to a person's unconscious mind.
  • Choose simple phrases (E.g. work with our company) to fill in the blanks in the patterns on the cards.
  • End your suggestions with a descending voice tone for increased authority.
  • Start reading the pattern on the card aloud, even if you don't know what you're going to say to complete it. Word selection is an unconscious function, so your unconscious may begin to fill in the blanks!
  • Set a goal for the game (E.g. for persuade someone to do a specific task or action). Then allow your unconscious to help reflect this in your language.
